COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A groundbreaking ceremony hosted by Tennis Success Inc. on Friday marked the start of construction for a new Community Tennis and Education Center for youth from third to 12th grade in Corpus Christi. Local leaders and partners attended the event — the center will offer expanded after-school and summer programs to boost tennis and educational opportunities.  KRIS 6 News
  • Attorney Thomas J Henry donated $150,000 at the Thomas J Henry Center for Philanthropy to help Coastal Bend Food Bank provide 600,000 holiday meals from now until Christmas — Executive Director Bea Hanson said the donation will help more people in Corpus Christi get meals during a time of rising need.  KRIS 6 News
  • Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend will give 200 free Thanksgiving meal tickets to families in need starting Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; more tickets will be available Nov. 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at its Center of Hope (1804 Buford St.), where families will pick up meals drive-through on Thanksgiving Day.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corpus Christi Independent School District lost over 3,500 students since 2019—a nearly 10% drop—and now faces a $27.5 million budget shortfall that may lead to closing seven historic schools. Community meetings to gather feedback will be held in December and early January, with plans to redistribute affected students beginning in August.  KRIS 6 News
  • Carroll High School principal Robert Arredondo will step down in mid-December—he accepted a new position with a district outside Corpus Christi—and Russell Whitehead will serve as interim principal starting in January. The district will post a search for a permanent leader ahead of the next school year.  Caller Times

  • CPS adoption caseworkers transformed a Nueces County courtroom into a bright and colorful space with decorations ahead of Adoption Day to finalize eight new families for nine children during National Adoption Awareness Month — a step that gave each child a safe start.  KIII-TV
  • The Corpus Christi Fire Department held a turkey frying safety demo to show residents what not to do with hot oil before Thanksgiving. Firefighters explained safe practices and warned of risks + shared tips to help prevent fires and injuries.  KIII-TV

  • The Type 1 diabetes community is hosting a Friendsgiving picnic and walk at Cole Park today at 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. while local couple John and Cheryl Navar plan to drive in a pink Hummer — loaded with donated Barbie dolls — to raise awareness and support for families affected by the condition.  KRIS 6 News

  • Friday Night Fever 2025 showed 25 Coastal Bend high school football teams qualified for the UIL first round playoffs and advanced to the area second round—now totaling 11 teams including two from TAPPS and one from the Texas Association of Independent Athletic Organizations.
